I have had cases where the noise just can't be removed without hurting the overall sound too much. There are diff tools for just noise, for just hum, for crackle and for clicks and pops. then select the whole file, and preview the reduction, and tweak the noise floor setting to find a compromise you can live with. then capture and save a noise profile of that. often at the head or tail of the wav, that is ONLY the noise. One of it's features that really help, is to make a short selection. an hour or two learning should get you into the ballpark. test on a copy and see what you come up with. If you have access to Audtition, I'd give it try. and I have pretty much settled on Auditions set of tools, which addmittedly can take some exprimentation to work with well, and one other item which I won't get into since I have to go to a friends studio to use it. Now this is only my opinion and my experience, but over the years I have tried just about every noise reduction tool out there. the trick is to remove or at least reduce the unwanted part and leave the rest so it sounds reasonable. Nothing does it without some affect of the total signal. sometimes just hum, more often a mix of other things. Noise, in all it's various forms, presents a particular set of problems. perhaps on can get it all done with ReaFIR, but Audition is one of the main tools I always go to for noise clean up.
